Lander-Grinspoon Students Win Honors

Posted on October 7, 2014

Sixth-grade students at the Lander-Grinspoon Academy recently participated in Letters About Literature, a reading and writing contest for students in grades 4 through 12 that is sponsored by the Center for the Book, a program of the Library of Congress.

The students were asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to that author about how the book affected them.

Four students were recognized for their work: Ariana Lev achieved an honors award in Level 1; Akhiva Mazile received an honorable mention; and Nava Chevan and Maya Laur were named semi-finalists. Ariana will travel to the State House in Boston to accept her award along with other students from across the state.

Cindy Kassell, a teacher at LGA, said the project “deepens students’ connection to a work of literature that has changed their lives. The competitive element sparks their enthusiasm and ignites their interest in writing to the author.”

Lander-Grinspoon Academy students have participated in the contest for the past 10 years.

The academy, now in its 17th year, offers academics, second-language learning and a social justice mission informed by Jewish cultural values.
