To Be the Light: End of the Year Appeal

Posted on December 7, 2023

Dear LGA Community,

In the past two months, I found myself saying, over and over again, that our school is a beacon of light in these challenging times. What does that mean? The world is a difficult place right now, but the joy of our students, their learning, their kindness, their songs, and their growth give all of us so much strength and hope. My message to you is coming as both as an email and a video, for accessibility and convenience.

As Hanukkah is fast approaching and the year is coming to an end, I am reaching out to you now, asking for your financial support of our wonderful school – and also to remind you of so many different ways in which LGA’s light finds its expression. Here are some of them:

The light of Gan students sounding out their first Hebrew letters

The light of older students laughing with the youngers

The righteous light of ten-year-olds setting up the apartments for the refugees

Light of outstretched hands of adults blessing the children on Friday afternoons

The light of the child who gets to hold the havdalah candle on a Monday morning

The frolicking light of the visiting Argentinian Klezmer duo last week

The light that’s on in Morah Devorah’s office so late into the evening

The bursting light of Morah Hilary’s going hoarse with encouragement of the ultimate team

The light of teachers tearing up at the faculty meeting moved by their students growth

The light of books stashed, stacked, strewn, tucked in every which surface in the school

The light of siblings walking up the front door holding hands

The stove’s light, cooking mashed potatoes for the shelter

Warmth and light in the building because an alumni parent made sure to set the thermostat for winter

The bright light of generosity of all who’ve given of their time and means at all kinds of hours to keep the school’s lights on

Light barely visible from the entryway because of all the piled bags for winter clothing drive

Morning light on the farm

Sundown on the playground but no one is in a rush to leave

The light of being together in difficult times

The light of teachers teaching each other about teaching hard history

Stumbling light stumbling through the first, precious verses of chanting the Torah

The delight of students sharing their makerspace inventions with their families

The way the faces of alumni light up when they talk about their LGA friends and teachers

The light of everyone rehearsing for the Hanukkah concert, next week, no pressure

The light of singing “Halevay” or “If only”, summoning a better world for all of us

The bright light of so many jokes

The light of a school where every teacher knows every child’s name

As you all know, we cannot sustain our incredible school through tuition costs alone, and need your support, today, to keep growing and moving forward. Please make your contribution today. Help us be the light that we are.
